DBT is a structured journey through four distinct stages, each building on the previous one. Your progress through these stages will be guided by your individual needs and goals.
Building commitment and understanding DBT
Where you are now - learning about DBT and preparing for the journey ahead
Safety and stability first
Focus on life-threatening behaviors, therapy-interfering behaviors, and quality of life issues
Processing and healing
Processing trauma and developing emotional resilience
Creating meaning and purpose
Achieving individual goals and creating meaning in your life
Your therapist works with you as a partner, helping you learn and practice skills while addressing your individual challenges.
Sessions focus on skill-building, problem-solving current issues, and applying DBT techniques to your daily life.
Individual therapy sessions plus skills group (if applicable). Expect 2-4 hours per week including homework and practice.
10-30 minutes of skill practice, diary cards, and mindfulness exercises.
Most people benefit from 6 months to 2 years of DBT, depending on individual needs and goals.
Remember, this is your journey. Progress isn't always linear - you might move through stages at different paces or revisit earlier stages as needed.
